Introducing the AIM EV Sport 01, a concept of an electric sports car that is set to make its inaugural public drive at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed later this month

Since the EV Sport 01 is their first concept car, AIM might not be a household name for many people. This Japanese engineering firm, which was founded in 1998, focuses on the technology and design of automobiles.

The EV Sport 01’s positive reception following its successful launch in Japan back in April encouraged AIM to explore the possibility of a limited series production. But right now, the car is being put through a lot of testing and evaluation. The idea is also being used by AIM to evaluate the performance of its cutting-edge APM200 electric motor, which is undergoing testing in a dual-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration.

The two-seat coupe boasts impressive numbers, with a curb weight of just 3,141 pounds (1,425 kilograms). Two APM200 motors power the vehicle, which has a maximum torque of 545 pound-feet and a combined output of 483 horsepower (360 kilowatts) (740 Newton-meters). Modern torque vectoring technology controls the motors, and the inverter maintains a 720V input and 380 kW of output power.

AIM claims that a laminated rechargeable lithium battery made up of four packs with a combined capacity of 81 kilowatt-hours powers the EV Sport 01’s dual-motor powertrain. With this setup, the driving range is predicted to be about 186 miles (300 km). Although the manufacturer doesn’t provide specific performance information, it is expected to be excellent given the car’s lightweight build, aerodynamic styling, and impressive power output.

The car is about the same length as a subcompact car at 153.5 inches (3.9 metres). But it stands out due to its lower height of 47.2 inches and wider width of 74.8 inches (1.9 metres) (1.2 meters). The multi-tubular aluminium chassis of the EV Sport 01 features a double-wishbone suspension setup at the front and rear.

The body panels of the EV Sport 01 feature a lightweight and strong carbon fibre laminate structure. The interior of the car has an all-carbon fibre “bathtub” design, which increases the vehicle’s overall strength and rigidity. The EV Sport 01 concept model has 20-inch wheels with 235/35 ZR20 tyres up front and 275/30 ZR20 tyres down back, which adds to its sporty appearance and performance.

The renowned chief designer at Nissan, Shiro Nakamura, is the leader of the SN Design Platform, which was tasked with creating the design for the small electric coupe. Nakamura contributes his knowledge and experience to the creation of the EV Sport 01. He was a key figure in the development of notable models like the GT-R, Cube, and Leaf, among others.

“We learned from the spirit of the great sports cars of the past, helped by the RWD configuration and layout. I wanted to express dynamism with sophisticated elegance through a simple, clean design. The EV Sport 01 has minimal form language and avoids exaggerated and complicated surfaces, reminiscent of the great European and Japanese sports cars of the 1960’s. Given that inspiration, it is particularly fitting we can demonstrate our car at Goodwood.”

Shiro Nakamura, president SN Design Platform
